Electric Trains to Begin Operations in Tripura by February
Currently, Tripura operates diesel-powered train engines. The electrification project, valued at Rs 460 million, is being carried out by Tripura State Electricity Corporation Ltd (TSECL), which will be ready to supply power to the railways' electric transmission line in the state by February.
The North Eastern Railways (NFR) has already completed electrification work between Badarpur and Agartala, passing through Dharmanagar. The project includes the installation of three traction power substations in Kumarghat (Unakoti district), Teliamura (Khowai district), and Udaipur (Gomati district). The Kumarghat substation was completed in March 2024, while the Udaipur substation is expected to be completed by this month and the Teliamura substation by February.
Nirupam Guha, Assistant General Manager of TSECL, mentioned that the Railways has requested 5 MW of power daily per substation, with the potential to supply more if needed. He added that the completion of the electrification project would pave the way for advanced, faster trains, boosting the state's infrastructure and contributing to economic growth.
Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, Chief Public Relations Officer of NFR, confirmed that the electrification work between Badarpur and Agartala has been completed, with the Lumding-Badarpur section remaining to be electrified. He assured that steps are being taken to complete this section promptly.
